The drawings in this crossword puzzle book, if the date marked on the front cover is correct (1969), would be among the last sketches produced by his hand, before he passed away in the spring of the same year. In her biography of her father, Marjorie Lismer Bridges uses a quote from Arthur as its epigraph, which seems to fit quite well with the beautiful borders he has drawn here: “It is the emotional ally of intelligence and desire to mould, to illustrate, and to make personal contributions to the age-long yearnings for humanity to enliven and decorate the fringe of laborious life with a border of beauty.” In describing the biography’s illustrations, Marjorie remarks: “He left countless small drawings on scraps of paper and backs of menu cards, as well as a large number of sketch books. Manuscripts and drawings together make an accurate commentary on a vivid career…. The cartoons are informal and amusing records of family events. Less known are those he drew for his own entertainment, as he experimented with lines and ideas.” (3) Later, she adds with regards to their home life: “He lingered over meals, generally took a nap in the afternoon, read detective stories, and sketched as the mood struck him.” (5) Here is an example of the informal sketches drawn by Arthur Lismer.
